NOTICE: Board of Cosmetology will continue to license and regulate the cosmetology industry in Tennessee for years to come.

The Tennessee Board of Cosmetology responds to concerns regarding the upcoming legislative session and clarifies that the Board of Cosmetology will continue to license and regulate the cosmetology industry in Tennessee for years to come.

“Recently, we have heard concerns from our licensee’s about the possibility of the industry being deregulated and we want to assure all cosmetology professionals that is absolutely not the case,” says Assistant Commissioner for Regulatory Boards Bill Giannini. “State regulation of professions, such as cosmetology, is essential to the health, safety, and welfare of our citizens and the Board of Cosmetology will continue to regulate professionals well into the future.”

Government Operations Committee Chair, Senator Mike Bell said “Large or small, every single board is significant - especially the boards with regulatory authority. These boards are important and we pay very close attention to them. Regulatory boards are essential to the industry, economy, and to the people who make their living within those professions and we want to make sure that they are operating in a manner that is best for both the state and the licensees.”

The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance Regulatory Boards are the best source for information on the upcoming legislative session. Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance encourages individuals licensed throughout the state to contact their respective regulatory board with questions and concerns.

The Tennessee Board of Cosmetology, within the Department of Commerce and Insurance, regulates the practice of cosmetology, including the licensure and registration of cosmetologists, instructors, aestheticians, manicurists, shampoo technicians, natural hair stylists, cosmetology shops, and cosmetology schools.
