Notification regarding Cosmetology Licensure Compact
Pursuant to Tenn. Code Ann. § 4-3-1306(d), you are receiving this notice because you have elected to receive notification by e-mail of certain changes or potential changes to the law applicable to your profession.
The Tennessee Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners is issuing this notification regarding the activation of the Cosmetology Licensure Compact.
During the 2023-2024 Legislative Session, the Tennessee General Assembly passed Public Chapter 1060. Public Chapter 1060 is titled as the “Cosmetology Licensure Compact” and establishes a regulatory framework for a new multistate cosmetology licensing program.
The Compact’s activation is triggered by the enactment of the law in the seventh member state. Seven states have now enacted the Compact. The seven member states are Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Kentucky, Maryland, Tennessee, and Virginia. Representatives from the seven member states will meet over the course of the next year to establish the Cosmetology Compact Licensure Compact Commission and the regulations for the multistate cosmetology license.
The new multistate cosmetology license will not be available until the Compact Commission establishes rules and regulations for the license. The Board anticipates that Tennessee cosmetology licensees will be able to apply for the multistate license sometime around July 2025. The Board will issue a notification when the multistate license becomes available.
