Notice of Public Rulemaking Hearing for the
Tennessee Board of Architectural and Engineering Examiners

Pursuant to Tenn. Code Ann. § 4-3-1306(d), you are receiving this notice because you have elected to receive notification by e-mail of certain changes or potential changes to the law applicable to your profession.

The referenced rules were adopted for a rulemaking hearing at the October 8, 2020 meeting of the Tennessee Board of Architectural and Engineering Examiners (“the Board”) and were approved at a rulemaking hearing on April 8, 2021 during a regularly scheduled meeting of the Board. The rules were filed with the Secretary of State on May 14, 2021 and have an effective date of August 12, 2021.

This rule amendment outlines what activities constitute progressive experience in the practice of engineering. The Special Committee on Experience Evaluation of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) has developed the guidelines for the work areas and skills an engineer intern must develop to obtain progressive engineering experience. Board members utilize these guidelines when evaluating exam applications, with greater weight being given to the Practical Application of Theory component. This list is available to licensees on the Board’s website and is utilized internally. In order for applicants to be properly notified of acceptable avenues of progressive experience, this rule is being amended to include the specific language denoting what activities qualify.

This rule amendment provides definitions for activities including, Practical Application of Theory, Management of Engineering, Communication Skills, and Social Implications of Engineering. As noted, this amendment will make a rule out of the guidelines for engineer qualifications the Board is currently utilizing.
