The Tennessee Board of Examiners for Land Surveyors approved proposed rules at their regularly scheduled meeting conducted on November 18, 2021. The Notice of Rulemaking Hearing was filed with the Secretary of State on May 26, 2022.

These rule amendments update the definition of Global Positioning System (“GPS”) to include reference to Global Navigation Satellite Systems (“GNSS”). GPS refers to the North American global positioning system and GNSS refers to the International Multi-Constellation Satellite System. GNSS encompasses GPS as well as other constellation systems providing for a more accurate and reliable capture of data that can be used by licensed land surveyors in their practice. Language is added to state that GNSS equipment may be used in gathering measurements in the course of a survey. Minimum standards for Remote Sensing Surveys are updated to delete those requirements surrounding GPS and incorporating GNSS standards. Additionally, these amendments provide a general cleanup of terminology in order to reflect more up to date language currently used in the profession. Specifically, the definitions section is amended to state that the terms “survey plat” and “survey map” may be used interchangeably. Throughout the rule, the term “survey plat” replaces “survey map” due to “survey plat” being the industry standard.
